Step into the Wonder of the Kimberley Wet Season
A journey through the Kimberley during the wet season is simply unforgettable. See iconic waterfalls such as King George, and Mitchell Falls in full flow, or traverse lush green landscapes, thriving after months of heavy rain. Our wet season voyages depart in March and April when you’re also likely to see marine turtles, giant trevally and an abundance of bird species.

Nature up close
With any expedition, we work hard to ensure you get to see nature up close. Although it is the nature of our expeditions that no two journeys are the same, here’s some of what you can expect from a wet season trip to the Kimberley.
Vibrant Birdwatching Opportunities
January is peak season for birdwatchers, with rare migratory birds stopping in Important Bird Areas like the Lacepede Islands and Adele Island. These islands are critical breeding sites for seabirds and support diverse marine life, including turtles and coral reefs.
King George River and Falls
Being most spectacular during the wet season, the powerful cascades flow at full force and are surrounded by lush, vibrant landscapes. The intense water flow, warm temperatures, and abundant wildlife create a unique experience, offering unforgettable photo opportunities and showcasing the Kimberley at its peak.
Magnificent Wet Season Skyscapes
The wet season brings dramatic skies filled with lightning shows and vibrant colours during sunsets. As the thunderstorms build, the clouds pile up along the horizon and lightning strikes electrify the skies. Localized, intense rainstorms and the unique Morning Glory cloud formations create awe-inspiring scenes across the Top End.
Abundant Wildlife
In northern Australia, Indigenous communities like the Walmajarri and Gooniyandi observe nature’s cues, not calendars, to mark seasons. During Yitilal (wet season, March–April), swollen rivers, blooming trees, and emerging wildlife bring the land to life. Coral Expeditions celebrates these shifts by sharing this knowledge on every voyage.
Montgomery Reef
Observe the unique marine spectacle of Montgomery Reef, when the ocean recedes with a tidal flow of 4 to 10 meters, revealing a thriving flat-top reef. As the water recedes, it unveils intricate rock pools teeming with marine life while the surrounding landscape flourishes, offering a rare and captivating view of this natural wonder.
A Unique Season for Flora and Fauna
While most avoid the wet season, those who visit witness northern Australia at its most vibrant. Plants bloom, wildlife thrives, and the rejuvenated landscape reveals a rich tapestry of sights, sounds, and scents. The rains breathe newfound energy into the landscape and usually timid and dormant flora and fauna spring to life.
