Cape York and Arnhem Land Art Themed Darwin to Cairns Coral Expeditions

Guest Artist | David Bosun

Torres Strait Island artist David Bosun is from the tribe of Wug on Moa Island. In 1993 he studied for an Associate Diploma in Communications at James Cook University and in 1996 he undertook a Visual Arts Course at the Tropical North Queensland Institute of Technology.

David Bosun is a senior artist at Moa Arts and one of the founders of the printmaking tradition in Zenadh Kes (the Torres Strait). He has worked in printmaking, drawing and painting for over 20 years.

‘Future generations in Zenadh Kes (as well as the rest of the world) need to be educated about the rich cultural heritage and distinctiveness of Mualgal culture. This is what I do in my own work, by bringing the aesthetic and personal qualities of the artwork together with my ancestral beliefs and Mualgal cultural traditions.’

Bosun’s work is held in the Cairns Regional Gallery, the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and in private collections in Australia.  Bosun has exhibited in group shows nationally and internationally. Recent examples of his work produced at the Mualgau Minaral Artist Centre workshop are travelling with other collective artists in their first exhibition, Gelam Nguzu Kazi – Dugong My Son, which will tour Australian regional galleries and overseas venues from 2001 to 2004.

David has also been a member of the Royal Australian Army reserve, he is a Councillor and Project Officer with Kubin Community Council and a founding member of the Mualgau Minneral Art Group of Moa Island.

The above information was gathered from Moa Art & Tali Gallery.

David has joined us onboard as a Guest Artist previously for our Cape York & Arnhem Land voyage in 2019, read the trip report HERE >

You can also view some of David Bosun’s artwork onboard Coral Adventurer.
