NOMADASAURUA TAKES THE ISLANDS OF INDONESIA

Our Unforgettable Journey Aboard Coral Geographer

By NOMADASAURUS

Hello, fellow adventurers! It’s NOMADasaurus here, and we’re thrilled to share our incredible journey aboard Coral Geographer with Coral Expeditions. Our time on this remarkable vessel was nothing short of magical.

THE PERFECT EXPEDITION SHIP

Coral Geographer turned out to be the ideal small ship for exploring off-the-beaten-path destinations. At 94 meters long and 17 meters wide, it struck the perfect balance—not too big and not too small. With space for about 120 passengers, it offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere that made every adventure feel personal and immersive. We spent a lot of time in the Bridge Deck Lounge, where we enjoyed learning from various presenters and even conducted our own photography workshops. The outer decks were fantastic for soaking in the fresh air and breathtaking views. Our stateroom was incredibly comfortable, complete with a private bathroom and a large window perfect for watching the ever-changing scenery. One of the standout features was the open bridge policy. We frequently visited the bridge and learned from the captain and officers about how the ship was navigated. It was a unique and engaging aspect of our journey.

CULINARY DELIGHTS AND WARM HOSPITALITY

The food on board was absolutely divine. Every meal was a treat, with a variety of delicious dishes that left us in awe. The kitchen staff did an amazing job, consistently delivering high-quality meals that were both tasty and beautifully presented.

The warmth and friendliness of the staff added to our enjoyment. From the expedition crew to the hotel team, deckhands, officers, engineers, and kitchen staff, everyone was incredibly welcoming. It felt like we were part of one big, happy family! Their enthusiasm for mingling with guests and sharing insights into the ship’s operations was a highlight of our experience.

A MEMORABLE WELCOME IN TUAL, INDONESIA

Our adventure began with a special visit to Tual in Indonesia, and it was nothing short of magical. As the first tour group to visit Kampung Taar Village, we were greeted with an extraordinary welcome. The entire village came out to celebrate with traditional music, dancing, and endless smiles. We could barely take three steps without being asked for a selfie!

The day was packed with highlights, from a school performance by students (even on a Sunday!) to a visit to the local church for another performance. We enjoyed delicious Indonesian food and were treated to a surprise karaoke and dance party led by the mayor. It was a fantastic start to our expedition, setting the bar high for the adventures to come.

EXPLORING THE SPICE ISLANDS

Our journey continued to the Banda Neira and Maluku province, an area steeped in history as the heart of the spice trade. In the 16th century, these islands were the world’s sole source of coveted spices like nutmeg, mace, and clove. The Dutch East India Company’s control of the spice trade led to intense battles and historical intrigue.

Today, Banda Neira offers a fascinating glimpse into this rich history. We explored the grounds of Belgica Fort, sampled nutmeg at working plantations, and enjoyed the vibrant local culture. Learning about the spice trade, including the process of cultivating and processing nutmeg and mace, was absolutely captivating.

The adventure didn’t stop there. We were greeted with a thrilling race into port by local Kora Kora canoes and then went snorkelling at a surreal lava flow site from the 1988 volcanic eruption. Wandering through Banda Neira and ending the day with drinks and local music atop Fort Belgica, with views of the stunning Gunung Banda Api volcano, was the perfect way to conclude an amazing day.
