Jodi Salmond
Marine Researcher | Conservation Biologist | Expedition Leader
Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, Jodi Salmond has always felt a deep connection to the ocean. A lifelong passion for marine science led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Marine Biology and Marine Parasitology at James Cook University. Over the past 15 years, Jodi has built a dynamic career as a marine researcher and conservation biologist, specialising in citizen science, reef ecology, and eco-leadership.
Jodi’s work has taken her across the globe, from whale shark and turtle research projects in Mozambique, to biodiversity studies on Christmas Island, to reef restoration initiatives on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and Moreton Bay. She currently serves as the General Manager of Reef Check Australia, where she leads community-driven reef health and marine debris monitoring programs, school education initiatives, and large-scale conservation efforts. Jodi continues to advocate for innovative sustainability solutions.
A natural adventurer, Jodi thrives in connecting people with nature. Whether training divers in reef health monitoring protocols, leading international student expeditions focused on mindfulness and leadership, or sharing stories journeys, Jodi inspires others to care for the planet and themselves.
Jodi recently completed a program in Homeward Bound, women in STEMM leadership program, and continues to assist the program as a part of the convergence steering committee.
In 2024, Jodi was named Sunshine Coast Business Woman of the Year in Sustainability, reflecting her commitment to creating meaningful environmental impacts. Beyond her professional life, Jodi is a self-proclaimed “water child”. She has a love for exploring both above and below the water, from the tiny to the massive critters that inhabit the world around us. Her innovative and hands-on approach makes her an engaging lecturer, blending science, storytelling, and a genuine passion for the natural world.
