Cara Cavanagh
Expedition Leader & Dive Instructor
I was born and raised in the coastal town of Byron Bay in Northern NSW. The ocean has always played a big role in my life. I was an active member of the surf lifesaving and surfing communities.
In my early twenties, I was employed by transport NSW as a Train Driver and after serving in this position for 10 years I realised that my passion was still with the ocean and scuba diving. I am passionate about the Great Barrier Reef and have spent the best part of the last two decades diving and working on the reef.
Marine tourism has opened many doors to advance practical skills in the industry where I have attained Master 5 and Marine Engine Driver 2 qualifications. These have proven valuable within the industry and awarded me the opportunity to work in many beautiful locations including Hayman Island, the Whitsunday’s, and Coral Bay on the Ningaloo reef.
I have been involved in research work and participated in Crown of Thorns Starfish eradication programs. I am also an avid traveller, so this style of expedition cruising makes for a perfect role of adventure and experience.
Since joining Coral Expeditions in 2019 I have been fortunate to be able to grow and develop within this pioneering cruise ship company. My first role being a dual Dive instructor and deckhand position. The beginning of 2021 I joined the Expedition Team and have made my way through the ranks to Expedition Leader learning and being mentored by our Senior Expedition Leaders.
I have also developed a passion for birdwatching, and I am an active member of the Cairns birdwatching community. I enjoy photography and I love experiencing the itineraries through the eyes of our guests and look forward to meeting you and taking you on your next great adventure.
