Head of Commercial

Position Description:

The Head of Commercial has the overall responsibility for revenue generation for Coral Expeditions.  Our clientele is largely from Australia with a growing interest from Europe and North America. As a strategist, he/she devises innovative approaches to promote the business, building on our reputation as Australia’s pioneering cruise line.  This includes responsibility for our market facing distribution and public relations activities, reservation system, pricing, commercial policies, customer database management and charter and other relationships.  He/she chairs meetings and leads tactical marketing and commercial initiatives to drive revenue generation.  He/she works closely with the Executive Director on branding and advertising.

As a senior manager, the Head of Commercial is second-in-command to the Group GM and is a member of Coral Expeditions’ Management Council.  He/she assumes overall responsibility for the business in the Group GM’s absence and is not shy of rolling up sleeves to solve operational issues in a highly regulated, safety conscious business.

The position is suitable for an ambitious, up and coming manager who wishes to build a career in a small but growing company.  Cairns has a laid-back tropical setting with a high quality / low cost living environment.  Our work environment is informal, collaborative and action-oriented.

What we are looking for:

> At least 12 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years P&L responsibility
> Structured thinker and planner
> Leadership attributes
> Sensitivity to boutique brand dynamics
> Background in travel/hospitality; prior experience in the cruise industry is a distinct advantage
> Comfortable with data and financial analysis
> Comfortable in a small company environment

Overall responsibilities:

> Takes primary role in ensuring the company meets its annual revenue targets by managing all occupancy drivers including promotional and marketing activity, and managing pricing
> Oversees Distribution Manager; provides oversight on distribution and reservation functions
> Manages marketing team and provides oversight of all PR and advertising/promotional activity
> Drives engagement with the consumer through the CE website and past passenger database
> Supports Executive Director in building the Coral Expeditions brand
> Acts as counsel and second-in-command to Group GM


Ship's Engineer

Coral Expeditions is Australia’s pioneering Expedition Cruise Line operating three small ships on extended cruise itineraries through the Great Barrier Reef, Tasmania, Western Australia’s Kimberley region, PNG, and Asia. To support the build out of our company, we are now looking for experienced Marine Engineers to join our growing fleet. 

Applications are invited from professional, self-motivated Engineers with demonstrated experience operating and maintaining vessels at sea.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintenance and repair of all mechanical, refrigeration and electrical equipment.
  • Ability to diligently follow the vessels Planned Maintenance System.
  • Assist in the management and compliance with the ships Safety Management Systems
  • On-board Safety Officer
  • Assist with snorkel watch as required


The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Minimum Certificate of Competency as Marine Engine Driver Grade 1 / or Engineer Watch keeper
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of medium sized vessels within the 30 to 65 metre range.
  • Mechanical or Electrical trade
  • Experience on passenger/tourism ships highly regarded
