An avid birder and photographer and volunteer for Tas Parks, Shane has spent a lot of time in Melaleuca and on Schouten Island.
As a teacher for the last 20 years, Shane taught food processing, tour guiding, remote area navigation and remote area survival skills. Shane is also known as a keen bush walker and is actively involved in volunteering for various government agencies.
Shane was involved in filming the cat eradication on Tasman Island, filming on Deal island, and involved in Swift parrot surveys and filming and producing Swift parrot documentary.
A volunteer for years with the Orange-Bellied Parrot program and formed ‘Friends of the Orange-bellied parrot’. Shane previously, for a number of years, was on the board of ‘Wildcare’, a community partnership with Parks and Wildlife Tasmania, with over 5000 members. Shane also volunteers for Parks on Schouten island and Cooks Beach at Freycinet Peninsula.
A keen bird watcher, Shane is involved in bird banding and assisting with various bird surveys. He also has a keen interest in flora, in particular native orchids – but basically anything in the bush. Shane used to collect butterflies and has an interest in lepidoptera.
Shane calls himself a ‘frustrated geologist’ (“I wanted to be one” he says) and is a member of the Geological society of Australia, Australian Mining history association, Burnie history society and a member of the International society of Biogeography.
