Guest Artist Carol Puruntatameri

We are pleased to announce that Carol Puruntatameri, a renowned painter from Munupi Arts, will be joining our ‘Best of the Kimberley and Tiwi Islands’ voyage as a guest artist, providing cultural and artistic insights. Having previously been onboard in October 2022, Carol’s return to our voyage brings with it a wealth of experience and creative expertise. Born in 1959 in Wurrumiyanga on Bathurst Island, Carol relocated with her family to Pirlangimpi on Melville Island. Coming from a family of artists, they nurtured her creative spirit by taking her to the Munupi Art Centre from a young age.

She fondly remembers observing her father as he painted his body, created art pieces, and involved the entire family in the fusion of art and culture. It wasn’t until she witnessed her uncle painting at the Munupi Arts Centre that she felt compelled to express her own creative spirit. Without any painting experience, Carol drew inspiration from her family members’ artistic endeavors and has been expressing her culture’s stories through her artwork at Munupi Arts since 2010.

“I think we need to have a museum here at the art centre so we can teach future generations”
